1847 Issues (#1)

Item # Description Price Picture
5351 #1, two copies tied by two strikes of brilliant red 7-bar hand-carved grid killer with matching KALAMAZOO, Mic., NOV 5, circa 1850 postmark on unreduced cover to Cooperstown, NY. This cover is unlisted in The United States 1847 Issue, A Cover Census.  All five of the other listed 5¢ covers bear only a single stamp; this is a unique multiple use.  Moreover, there are no 10¢ 1847 covers verified used from Kalamazoo.  The left of the two stamps is a sound, 4 margin stamp; the right stamp is in at right and at upper left.  The 2000 PFC mentions light creases, including a horizontal crease through the postmark.  The certificate does not mention that a small strip of the cover back under the flap is torn away.  A beautiful and very scarce Michigan 1847 issue cover.  Ex Craveri. $1100

5248 #1, brown shade, fine 3 margin copy, just touching at bottom, canceled by VF blue numeral 5 rate mark with matching LEE, Ms., AUG 16 (1849) postmark on VF FLS. Cover has 1979 Philatelic Foundation certificate.  This is one of just three listed Lee, Massachusetts 5¢ uses in The United States 1847 Issue, A Cover Census and the only one with the numeral killer.  A scarce and very attractive cover. SOLD

5011 # 1, red brown, VF 4 margin copy, sound (image), tied on fine, intact wax sealed envelope by greenish blue 7 bar grid killer with matching GREENSBURGH, Pa., MAR 27 (1850) postmark (docketed 1850 at bottom left).  This is one of 20 Greensburgh covers listed in The United States 1847 Issue, A Cover Census.  All are from one correspondence to a Miss Anna B. Smith in Mercersburg, PA.  Cover has a 9 mm tear at top center but is otherwise entirely sound. $525
4993 #2, 4 margin copy, tied by red New York grid killer on fine external FLS to Rev. Wm. Jenks, D.D. of Boston, canceled New York, JAN 1 (1851) with VF BALTIMORE R.R. straight line railroad marking and manuscript "Pd. by Stamp".  This is a very scarce use of #2.  The United States 1847 Issue, A Cover Census lists only five 10c covers, excluding this, with the BALTIMORE R.R. straight line. 1993 APS certificate ("genuine, stamp has tiny tear at left" with nick at bottom not mentioned) with additional note from Mercer Bristow.  ("An adhesive disc was use[d] to apply stamp to cover.  Most likely the stamp had little gum at the time of use and would not stay on envelope by itself.")  SOLD

4989 #2, fair, faults, (image) tied by manuscript X cancel on fine FLS, vertical filing fold, with red JAN 21, OZAUKEE, WIS. postmark and mailed to The Post Master in Beverly, Virginia. The letter is datelined Port Washington, WI, JAN 19, 1851, an Ozaukee County town without post office at that time.  This cover is one of only two 1847 issue covers mailed from Ozaukee (a scarce Wisconsin DLO, 1849-79, Helbock rated 7) that is listed in The United States 1847 Issue, A Cover Census (the other bears a pair of #1s).  The Ozaukee post office received no 1847 issue stamps but they were available, probably due to the town's proximity to Milwaukee.  All 1847 issue covers from Wisconsin are quite scarce, with only 65 recorded.  Of the 33 listed 10 cent covers, 19 are from Milwaukee.  A wonderful and rare small town use from Wisconsin of the U.S. first issue stamp. $1250
4674 #1, F-VF, red brown color, sound, with an XF SOTN strike of red numeral 10 rating mark. Stamp has 4 clear margins, close at top. 2003 PFC, "It is genuine with an additional manuscript marking at bottom." A beauty. $600
4675 #1, VF, red brown, 4 balanced margins, canceled by an XF SOTN strike of unusual blue 4-bar grid in detached circle killer, a rare cancel. 1998 PFC, "It is genuine with two small tears and light horizontal creases."  Pretty. $600
4676 #1, fine, red brown color, late impression, bearing a superb SOTN strike of very rare red Greenwich, NY target cancel. 1996 PFC, "It is genuine with a small closed tear at top center." Tear less than 1mm. A WOW killer.

SOLD

4160 #2, sheet margin, cut in at bottom copy, small faults, manuscript cancel, file fold ties to FLS datelined Mills Point, KY, SEP 3, 1848 (image of letter).  FLS has manuscript Hickman, KY SEP 5 postmark and bold manuscript "Paid by Stamp" at upper right.  Cover is listed in Alexander's cover census of 1847 issues and is the only recorded use from Hickman, Kentucky, which received only 200 10 cent stamps. 1999 PFC.
