Department Officials (#3)

Item # Description Price Picture
395 #O58, 2 cent State, XF, fresh with large margins and black cork cancel (appears darker in scan than actual).  Single nibbed perf at right and two tiny corner creases do not detract from this very attractive official. $40
2903 #O59, VF, sound, bearing a VF strike of NY foreign mail numeral 4 ellipse killer.

SOLD

5143 #O59, fine, sound, tied by Washington, DC quartered cork killer, circa 1874-5, on small, intact diplomatic pouch cover from U.S. Legation, Guatemala with VF blue straight line DEPARTMENT OF STATE hand stamp. The cover, which is personal stationery engraved on the back flap with the initials of the U.S. Minister, George Williamson, is torn from opening on back with single tear continuing to front under the stamp (stamp unaffected).  Some mild toning on front.  A great opportunity to acquire a clean, small cover use of this stamp. $350
3686 #O60, mint, o.g. (hinge disturbed), VF, sound, bright and fresh, crisp perfs, from plate position 27 displaying a major plate scratch in the left margin that projects into the stamp. Scarce and desirable example of this Scott listed plate variety.  2011 Scott catalog $325. $250
2016 #O60, 6 cent State, fine, cancelled by violet quartered cork killer with matching APR 29, 1878 Washington, D.C. postmark.  The VF Department of State, U.S.A. cover is neatly opened at right with two clean vertical bends at left. The stamp has a tiny corner crease at lower right and is very fresh.  Very scarce on cover usage, especially with color killer. $650 n2016.jpg (46177 bytes)
5302 #O61, 7¢ State, F-VF bottom left corner margin copy, immense margins, canceled by light strike of NYC duplexed vertical numeral 3 foreign mail ellipse. Stamp has small, mild pressed corner crease at bottom right. A very impressive stamp. SOLD
4047 #O61, F+ 7 cent State, cancelled by a double oval 1884 New York City foreign mail killer. Stamp has small hinge thin. Neat and scarce use. $40
5378 #O63, 12¢ State, F-VF, sound and fresh copy, moderate black cancel. Stamp is printed on horizontally ribbed paper, a variety unlisted in Scott, and only listed on a few officials. 2011 Scott catalog $125. A wonderful and scarce variety for the specialist. On Extension
5445 #257, VF 8¢ Sherman, tied by VF Philadelphia RD double oval registry division killer, stamp paying registry on VF intact U.S. Mint envelope, purple hand stamp penalty clause at UR, intact mint wax seals on reverse $45
5180 #O72, F-VF+, sound, tied by target killer on VF intact unsealed USIR Collector's Office, 21st District, New York small envelope. Stamp has a distinct double transfer at top.  Scarce and desirable usage and plate variety. $150

4928 #O72, F-VF SE stamp, tiny faults, tied by quartered cork killer and paying the 1 cent unsealed circular rate on fine Treasury Department return envelope, docketed MAY 18 on front and 1875 on reverse. Quarter inch cover reduction at right and small tear.  Scarce. $85
4081 #O72, fine, tied by quartered cork killer and circa 1874 SHARON, MAS. postmark on intact unsealed old style USIR Collector's Office large envelope, manuscript "Missent" with additional postmark. Small cover faults at top. $75
5465 #O72, 1¢ Treasury, XF appearing stamp, small filled thin, canceled by a VF strike of ATLANTA, GA. postmark. Well struck postmarks on officials, particularly southern towns and cities, are quite scarce.

SOLD

5343 #O72, XF 1¢ Treasury, large margins, canceled by an XF-superb SOTN strike of purplish violet cross fancy killer and light, matching postmark rim (Aurora, IL). Stamp has 3 mm cut at left. Despite the fault this is a gorgeous and eye-catching color cancel on an official.

SOLD

4130 #O72, VF, nice margins, fresh, light cork grid killer. Pretty stamp. Repaired perf at left. $5
4327 #O73, 2 cent Treasury, fine, tiny fault, tied by hollowed quartered cork killer on unsealed intact early style USIR penalty envelope from North Carolina 4th district office paying circular rate to private citizen. This is an extremely scarce use of a penalty with an official stamp.

SOLD

5025 #O73, F+, unused n.g., tiny margin thin, stamp clearly shows double transfer in 2 at bottom plus other additional line remnants in the T, R and S of TREASURY, plus two dots at top left and dash outside bottom left corner.  In his August 2010 article in the USPCS Chronicle on constant plate varieties on Treasury Department stamps, George Sayers writes regarding this stamp, "At least two positions show downward shifted double transfers which include the dark shading lines below and to the right of the "2"."  This stamp is position 94R.  Scarce variety. SOLD
4969 #O73, XF, sound, firm perfs all around. Due to the size of the design of this stamp it is very difficult to find this so well centered with such nice margins. Great color, moderate cancel, a very nice stamp. $30
1310 #O73, VF-XF, sound, with SOTN semi-transparent block negative H cancellation of Boston, MA.  This particular stamp is exceedingly difficult to find with nice margins like this.  (See: Campbell, Alan, "The Quest for Perfection: Observations on Grading and on Perforating the Official Stamps," The Chronicle of the U.S. Classic Postal Issues, November 2007.) $20
5095 #O74, 3 cent Treasury, on USIR Deputy Collector's Office envelope, roughly opened at right, slightly affecting stamp, MILFORD, DEL. postmark, purple personalized hand stamp bearing collector's name. Official uses from Delaware are very scarce. $15
5526 #O74, average, canceled by a superb SOTN strike of an aquamarine blue 5-point star fancy killer, a very scarce and unusual color cancel.

SOLD

5464 #O74, F-VF+ 3¢ Treasury, canceled by an XF-superb SOTN strike of blue fancy X crossroads killer of Chicago, IL (Berg type CR-3, or similar). Pretty stamp.

SOLD

5126 #O74, XF, sound, large margins, light purple cancel, stamp showing a distinct short transfer/plate erasure in lower left margin. Scarce plate variety on a very attractive stamp.

SOLD
