Machine Postmarks (#3)

Item # Description Price Picture
3160 Leavitt experimental machine cancel type X1-WASH-III, VF strike of this rare cancellation with OCT 17, 1882, Washington, DC postmark on Department of the Interior Pension Office penalty envelope.  Cover is unreduced but missing its back flap.  Nevertheless, a highly collectible example of this cancellation. $150 n3160.jpg (53297 bytes)
2671 #182, F+, tied by a partial but readable example of the extremely rare experimental Leavitt type X1-B (Boston) killer on VF unsealed circular.  Only the bottom half of the cancellation and postmark are on the cover, and the postmark is missing its year date below the time. However, key elements of the type are fairly clear: the left curve and bottom ending lip of the letter C are apparent in the oval, and the third bar from the bottom of the oval is thinned but unbroken (enlarged image of cancellation).  The ellipse is 19.5 mm across (Die 1, letter C previously only reported with 19.0 mm Die 2) and the dial is Die B (the "SS" in "MASS" are narrow).  No pin gripper marks are apparent on the envelope.  The cover contains its original contents, the program for the December 29, 1881 Convention of Teachers of Industrial Drawing, plus an uncancelled UX7 reply card, hand written and dated Boston, Dec. 14, 1881. Interestingly, the cover is back stamped by a Boston negative numeral 7 in horizontal bars killer with DEC. 17 postmark. Given that this is a local Boston cover, I believe it likely that this date represents the actual mail date for this cover, making it the LRU for X1-B with letter C.  This analysis has been confirmed by the foremost collector of Leavitt cancellations.  Interestingly the Boston negative barred 7 DEC 17 back stamp (enlarged image) is the ERU for this marking.  An immensely rare and possibly unique Leavitt experimental killer. $200 n2671.jpg (20684 bytes)
2396 #UX5, fine, bearing an XF strike Leavitt ellipse machine cancellation type B-BUF (Buffalo, NY) with letter omitted, known only 1879-80. Postmarked SEP 10, 1880 (2 digit year). $12 n2396.jpg (22130 bytes)
2321 #UX5, fine, bearing a fine strike of scarce Leavitt machine killer A-2 (Boston), Die II, FEB/ 20, 1878, 7 P.M. postmark. A nice example of this killer. $20 n2321.jpg (25228 bytes)
2276 #UX7, fine, small corner creases, bearing a VF-XF strike of Indianapolis, IN Leavitt machine letter D ellipse killer (type B-IND, Die I postmark), late APR 26, 1884 use. $7 n2276.jpg (23978 bytes)
2076 #U 76 cut square bearing a VF strike of rare Leavitt machine experimental killer Type X-1 with letter D in oval. Cut square lacks postmark to verify source. A great opportunity to acquire this very scarce cancellation, one which few are ever likely to possess on cover. $15 n2076.jpg (5668 bytes)
804 #UX7, VF and fresh bearing a superb strike of scarce type D-1 Leavitt machine cancellation, Boston March 23, 1882 (early use), card from Maverick National Bank to First National Bank, Helena, MT. A gem. $30 n804.jpg (28012 bytes)
805 #UX7, VF and fresh, bearing an XF strike of type C Leavitt machine cancellation, November 4, 1886 Washington, D.C., card from Citizens' National Bank to Hagerstown Bank, Hagerstown, MD. Nice. $10 n805.jpg (28393 bytes)
