Banknote Stamps (#6)

Item # Description Price Picture
4774 #163, faulty, bearing a superb SOTN strike of large star within star within star killer (Cole STU-3/5). This killer is typically found only on departmental officials, this being only the second reported example on regular postage, the other on a 10c Continental.  At top there is a partial capture of the rim of a green postmark, but its authenticity is questionable.  A great reference item for the specialist. SOLD
4607 #213, F+, corner crease at UR, bearing SOTN purple boxed "FOR IMMEDIATE ACCEPTANCE ONLY" contractual offer term. Stamp possibly used on a contract to pay some fee.  Most unusual. SOLD
4459 #178, VF-XF, large margins, canceled by an XF strike of boxed hatchet/tomahawk killer (S-E PO-Wt 1 [see scan], Whitfield 1077). Stamp also shows a partial strike of blue postmark, possibly a French receiving stamp.  This fancy killer is reported on 1861-67 issues.  Nevertheless, I believe this strike to be genuine.  The killer shows no evidence of bleeding.  Moreover, the top left edge of the black cancel appears on the back of perfs at the top left where the edge folded over when the killer was struck.  A great fancy cancel.  (HCS) SOLD
4469 #183, F+, sound, canceled by a VF strike of 3-ring circular geometric verifying that stamp was used from Hawaii. Killer is MH ring3-23, Davey 117, Shaffer 2-158, used from Hawaii on foreign mail 1876-84. Rare usage.  (See Post Office in Paradise web site, ring cancels.)  (HCS) $100
4468 #183, F-VF, sound, canceled by a VF-XF strike of fancy smiling pumpkin head/jack-o'-lantern killer of Providence, RI (Cole JO-50, Whitfield 309).  (HCS) $75
4470 #183, fine, bearing an XF strike of Worcester, MA circular geometric killer (Cole GCR-2, Whitfield 3916). Stamp has tiny surface abrasion at bottom, otherwise sound. Pretty.  (HCS) SOLD
4466 #206, fine, small corner crease at upper left, bearing a VF-XF strike of arched HELD FOR POSTAGE, stamp apparently canceled after missing postage applied. Scarce.  (HCS) $35
4461 #206, VF, bearing a F-VF+ SOTN strike of the San Francisco cogwheel killer, a scarce and very late use of this fancy killer.  (HCS) SOLD
4457 #156, VF, sound, bearing an XF-superb strike of letter T killer of St. Paul, MN (Cole Lt-7, Whitfield 6212).  (HCS) $15
4155 #210, fine, SE, tied on piece by VF 9-bar ellipes killer with internal letters LP with matching LAKE PLACID, N.Y. postmark. Scarce multi-letter ellipse killer. $25
4032 #183, VF, sound, canceled by a fancy negative killer with central starburst. The letters appear to show BOSTON, MASS. Boston used several large negative killers on packages and third class mail, but I have not seen this one. SOLD
1718 #147, VF, sound, bearing an immaculate, GEM strike of blue fancy cancel showing the 4 playing card suit symbols (Cole Pi-70).  An incredible fancy cancellation for the finest collection.    (Click the image to view an enlargement.)

SOLD

1732 #207, fine, light black cork cancel plus VF strike of blue MAINE CENTRAL RAILROAD, MAR 29 agent hand stamp in outline shield. This marking is unlisted in Towle and Meyer.
