Banknote Stamps (#3)

Item # Description Price Picture
4612 #147, VF, bearing an XF strike of small, solid heart killer, source town unknown. $40
4611 #158, F-VF, sound, canceled by an XF-superb SOTN strike of large Christian cross killer of Oberlin, Ohio (Cole CSO-12). Great cancel.

SOLD

4609 #207, XF, on very thick paper split like double paper (ending in tears) canceled by an XF SOTN strike of Philadelphia, PA numeral 14 killer in small oval, the result of squeezing this retasked killer into a small duplex format.

SOLD

4453 #147, fine, sound, tied on piece by XF strike of oval commercial advertising hand stamp used as killer from SHENANDOAH, PA. The killer reads, "Dealer in TOBACCO PIPES CIGARS BOOKS & stationery etc. Shenandoah City, PA."  It would appear that the dealer's name was removed from atop the oval prior to conversion of this hand stamp (likely used as an advertising stamp on mailings) to a postal use.  I speculate that this killer originated from the personal business of the postmaster.  There were two during the period of use of Scott #147: Jonathan D. Ellis (appointed 08/02/1865) and Henry C. Boyer (appointed 12/11/1872).  I consider the latter the more likely, since he had a more commercial presence in Shenandoah, being the publisher of the local newspaper among other activities.  This is a wonderful, unusual and highly exhibitable killer on the 3 cent issue.  (HCS)

SOLD

4474 #158, VF, pinpoint thin, bearing a superb SOTN strike of negative outline letter P killer. Extremely eye-catching cancellation.  (HCS)

SOLD

4475 #184, fine, sound, canceled by a VF+ strike of unlisted W. RUTLAND PO (West Rutland, Vermont post office) killer. This cancellation is quite similar to another rare killer from this town (W. Rutland on UX7).  (HCS)

SOLD

4476 #158, F+, sound, canceled by an XF SOTN strike number 3 bottle stopper carved into a pinwheel cross killer of Springfield, MA (Whitfield 6421). Scarce and unusual.  (HCS)

SOLD

4477 #184, VF, scissor-trimmed perfs at top and right, canceled by an XF SOTN strike of large cross in circle.  (HCS) $15
4162 #158, F+, canceled by an XF-superb SOTN strike of NEW ORLEANS fancy geometric killer, Cole type GEN-93. Very pretty.

SOLD

4139 #156, VF-XF, large margins, sound, canceled by a VF+ strike of blue checkerboard killer of Chicago, IL. Small paper inclusion on reverse only. Pretty. $30
1742 #158, VF, bearing a VF strike of a very rare, possibly unique, Rutherford B. Hayes presidential campaign killer. The stamp shows "[H]AYES" in italicized capital letters within upper and lower horizontal bars of an apparently oval shaped killer. This particular killer is not listed in Cole, which lists two from Carmel, NY and one from Waterbury, CT.  Nevertheless, I consider this killer to be entirely genuine.  An incredible item and a showpiece for any collection.  (Click the image to view an enlargement.) $200
1306 #184, VF+ bottom margin copy, sound, bearing an XF strike of an unusual elongated diamond grid cancellation composed of nine narrow barrows (unlisted in Cole). $10
1348 #178, F-VF, bearing SOTN strike of powder blue cross cancellation, probably from St. Louis, MO.  Stamp has corner perf crease. SOLD
2144 #179, VF, bearing an XF SOTN strike of intense black 16 segment circle of wedges killer of New Orleans, LA. Stamp has single nibbed perf at top but is otherwise sound. SOLD
1345 #179, VF, fresh, bearing XF strike of intense black hollow 8-branch leaf fancy cancellation, probably from New Orleans, LA. Stamp has small, light corner crease. $25
1344 #179, F-VF+, bearing a superb SOTN strike of intense black, squared geometric cancellation composed of two hollow and two solid opposing wedges, New Orleans, LA origin. Stamp has small faults. SOLD
