| 4453 |
#147, fine, sound, tied on piece by XF strike of
oval commercial advertising hand stamp used as killer from
SHENANDOAH, PA. The killer reads, "Dealer in TOBACCO PIPES CIGARS
BOOKS & stationery etc. Shenandoah City, PA." It would
appear that the dealer's name was removed from atop the oval prior
to conversion of this hand stamp (likely used as an advertising
stamp on mailings) to a postal use. I speculate that this
killer originated from the personal business of the postmaster.
There were two during the period of use of Scott #147: Jonathan D.
Ellis (appointed 08/02/1865) and Henry C. Boyer (appointed
12/11/1872). I consider the latter the more likely, since he
had a more commercial presence in Shenandoah, being the publisher of
the local newspaper among other activities. This is a
wonderful, unusual and highly exhibitable killer on the 3 cent
issue. (HCS) |

| 4474 |
#158, VF, pinpoint thin, bearing a superb SOTN
strike of negative outline letter P killer. Extremely
eye-catching cancellation. (HCS) |

#184, fine, sound, canceled by a VF+ strike of
unlisted W. RUTLAND PO (West Rutland, Vermont post office) killer.
This cancellation is quite similar to another rare killer from this
town (W. Rutland on UX7). (HCS) |

 |
| 1742 |
#158, VF, bearing a VF strike of a very rare,
possibly unique, Rutherford B. Hayes presidential campaign killer. The stamp shows
"[H]AYES" in italicized capital letters within upper and lower horizontal bars of an apparently oval
shaped killer. This particular killer is not listed in Cole,
which lists two from Carmel, NY and one from Waterbury, CT.
Nevertheless, I consider this killer to be entirely genuine. An
incredible item and a showpiece for any collection. (Click

$200 |
 |
| 1306 |
#184, VF+ bottom margin copy, sound, bearing an XF strike of an unusual elongated diamond grid cancellation composed of nine narrow barrows (unlisted in Cole). |

#179, VF, bearing an XF SOTN strike of intense black 16 segment circle of wedges killer of New Orleans,
LA. Stamp has single nibbed perf at top but is otherwise sound. |
