Banknote Stamps (#2)

Item # Description Price Picture
4772 #158, XF, small faults, canceled by an XF SOTN strike of large hollow center 5 point star and crescent fancy killer, most likely from Pittsburgh (Cole CR-31). Attractive stamp and killer. $50
4613 #158, VF-XF, sound, bearing an XF-superb SOTN strike of large, curved and hollowed Maltese cross killer. Beautiful cancel and stamp. $35
4614 #158, fine, sound top margin copy, canceled by a VF+ strike of OSWEGO, NY pumpkin face killer (Whitfield 209). $35
4460 #158, F-VF, fresh, pulled perf at right, canceled by an XF SOTN strike of blue boxed STEAMER JNO. W. THOMPSON MAY 21 1878.  This stamp is the apparent source of the Whitfield tracing 6834, which lists this as a Mississippi packet.  However, Milgram (Vessel-Named Markings on United States Inland and Ocean Waterways 1810-1890) illustrates on p. 393 a cover bearing this marking, designated Milgram 708 (Klien 556A), demonstrating this to be an Atlantic coastal steamer, not a Mississippi packet.  An absolutely wonderful waterway marking on a stamp!  (HCS) $150
4472 #184, F+, small faults, canceled by an XF strike of bright red connected OK killer, unlisted in major references, scarce.  (HCS) SOLD
4473 #158, F+, sound, canceled by an XF strike of very scarce numeral 12 in fine grid experimental machine killer of New York City.  (HCS) SOLD
4351 #147, avg, canceled by a VF+ strike of scarce Pittsburgh, PA shield machine killer, Cole MC-3. Stamp has a couple trimmed perfs at upper right. $45
4458 #158, XF, minor faults, canceled by a VF strike of a left-facing short arrow fancy killer, most likely from Fredericksburg, VA (Cole AR-2).  (HCS) $15
4172 #184, fine, bearing a VF double strike of popular kicking mule fancy killer. Scarce. $60
4127 #158, fine, blunted perfs at top, otherwise sound, bearing an XF strike of large pumpkin mask fancy face killer of LEWISTON, ME (Cole JO-30), scarce. SOLD
4128 #184, fine, canceled by a XF-superb SOTN strike of rare backward facing flag patriotic killer (Cole FL-13). Stamp has small thin and is toned at UR, nevertheless a terrific example of this difficult item. $85
4023 #148, XF sound stamp, firm perforations all around, fresh rich carmine color. The VF bright red target killer only enhances the beauty of this stamp. A GEM STAMP in all respects.

SOLD

78 #159, XF stamp, SE, tiny fault, bearing VF and interesting black checkerboard cancel over 70% of the stamp. $12
250 #159, VF, with VF/XF strike of neat black floral geometric cancellation (similar to Cole GRF-16/17). $20
641 #159, fine and sound, bearing VF-XF strike of negative Roman numeral "II" cancellation. Unusual numeral. $12
1323 #150, VF+ sound stamp with XF strike of cancellation composed of 6 or more vertical bars, possibly Pittsburgh, PA (Cole GE-62) or possibly NYFM (Weiss TR-G29a). Eye catching. $25
92 #161, XF, very fresh and sound with small, neat blue quartered cork cancellation.  A gem.

SOLD

423 #162, XF-S, very fresh, light black NYFM cancellation, 1998 PF certificate 0324192. PF notes a "small surface rub at top left", a trivial detraction from this beautiful stamp. $150
1307 #147, VF+, sound, cancelled by a VF strike of a red target cancellation and light Baltimore, MD foreign mail postmark. Very attractive red and green color contrast. $25
402 #158, fine, just in at top, bearing a SOTN strike of a reddish black broken Christian cross composed of many diagonal fine lines. Very unusual and unlisted. $15
