#158, F-VF, fresh, pulled perf at right, canceled by
an XF SOTN strike of blue boxed STEAMER JNO. W. THOMPSON MAY 21
1878. This stamp is the apparent source of the Whitfield
tracing 6834, which lists this as a
Mississippi packet. However, Milgram (Vessel-Named Markings
on United States Inland and Ocean Waterways 1810-1890)
illustrates on p. 393 a cover bearing this marking, designated
Milgram 708 (Klein 556A), demonstrating this to be an Atlantic
coastal steamer, not a Mississippi packet. An
absolutely wonderful waterway marking on a stamp! (HCS) |
$150 |

of this difficult item. |

#158, VF, bearing a VF strike of a very rare,
possibly unique, Rutherford B. Hayes presidential campaign killer. The stamp shows
"[H]AYES" in italicized capital letters within upper and lower horizontal bars of an apparently oval
shaped killer. This particular killer is not listed in Cole,
which lists two from Carmel, NY and one from Waterbury, CT.
Nevertheless, I consider this killer to be entirely genuine. An
incredible item and a showpiece for any collection. (Click

$200 |

#162, XF-S, very fresh, light black NYFM

beautiful stamp. |
