Banknote Covers (#5)

Item # Description Price Picture
5540 #210, VF, sound, tied by superb strike of medium-large letter H killer with LACONIA, N.H., NOV 11 postmark on VF intact cover to Northampton, MA (back stamp). Attractive cover, killer unlisted in major references. $25
5367 #210, VF, sound, canceled by VF strike of HAVERFORD COLLEGE, PA., MAY 17, 1884 postmark with duplex numeral 24 in 11 bar ellipse, a John Goldsborough commercial rubber hand stamp, on fine cover. $25
5158 #210, fine, faults, canceled GRAHAM TX (Young County, 1873-), JUL 4, 1887 on intact cover to Mountain Home, TX, Bell County.  (This PO existed in Bell County only 1870-71, reestablished in Kerr County in 1879.)  Cover traveled to El Paso (JUL 5 back stamp) and from there to St. Louis, MO, where it received a magenta JUL 12 INQUIRY DIVISION postmark (reverse) and  matching "NO SUCH OFFICE IN STATE NAMED/2" (and blue crayon 2) on front.  Cover then sent to the Dead Letter Office in Washington, DC (JUL 15 receiving postmark and numeral 6 ellipse killer on front, matching DLO triangle on back).  Apparently the DLO office identified the correct address (Holland applied in red ink) and applied on front a purple triangular DEFICIENCY IN ADDRESS SUPPLIED AT D.L.O. hand stamp.  It also applied Post Office Department, Dead-Letter Office forwarding label on reverse (scarce Scott OXA2, $300 in 2011 catalog).  The cover was reforwarded to HOLLAND, TX (Bell County) where the label received a JUL 18 Holland postmark.  An absolutely wonderful example of the Post Office Department's efforts to correctly forward mail, and a great Texas postal history item. SOLD
