Banknote Covers (#4)

Item # Description Price Picture
4981 #184, VF, SE, canceled by a superb SOTN strike of negative letter B in starburst (Cole Lb-51) with WORCESTER, MASS postmark on intact cover, edge faults, including tear into address at bottom. A great fancy killer. $25
4879 #158, XF, sound, tied by XF strike of NYC negative 8 numeral killer. Stamp placed over the red cameo corner advertisement to obscure the former addressee (Marks Hooper & C., Provision Dealers) and cover re-embossed with new vendor name information (John D. Griffen, Fish, Salt & Provisions).  An XF, intact and attractive cover, and quite unusual. SOLD
4748 #207, bearing a superb SOTN strike of rare MITTINEAGUE, MASS. negative outline numeral 7 in shield surrounded by 13 rays on cover with MAR 20 postmark. Cover opened roughly at right damaging UR stamp corner, stain at left.  Despite these faults, this is likely the finest on-cover example of this wonderful Mittineague fancy cancel extant with wonderful eye-appeal. SOLD

4641 #158, fine, sound, tied by an XF-superb strike of fancy crossroads killer with clear WATERBURY, CONN. Sep 5 postmark (Rohloff C-7, RR rated, not more than 15 copies known) on clean intact cover neatly opened at left. $95
4357 #158, VF-XF, sound, canceled by a VF SOTN strike of fancy 6-petal leaf killer (Rohloff L-15) with WATERBURY, CT, MAY 3 postmark (1876) on VF unreduced cover, small part of back flap gone. Attractive and desirable example of this Waterbury fancy killer.  (HCS) SOLD

4493 #158, fine, sound, tied by superb SOTN strike of blue negative OK killer of GENEVA, WI (Cole OK-45) on fine intact cover to Connecticut, small cover tears at left. A pretty killer.  (HCS) SOLD
4222 #157, #158, #159, fine sound copies, each tied by strike of 3-bar killer of LAGRANGE, TENN. (Fayette County 1828-), paying the 8 cent registry plus postage on intact cover, small light stain at BL. Attractive 3-color franking. $85
3826 #179 pair, fine, plus #158 on registered cover from PORTCHESTER, NY to Vermilllion, OH. Cover is F-VF, intact with part of removed registry receipt on back. Blue dry goods dealer corner card advertisement.  The right stamp of the pair distinctly shows under-inking of lettering giving the appearance of hollowness. $45

3167 #156, #161, fine, tied by concentric ring killers, paying the 8 cent registry + 3 cent postage on VF registered cover. No postmark, but MAY 5, 1875 letter verifies Arapahoe, NE (Furnas County) source. Short lived 8 cent registry rate and nice Nebraska postal history. $30 n3167.jpg (20045 bytes)
3130 #158, fine, bearing a SOTN strike of negative OK killer (Cole OK-49) with matching PALATINE, ILL. (Cook County) postmark on F-VF yellow cover, 1/4 inch reduction at right. $35 n3130.jpg (17357 bytes)
2154 #160, fine, with #157 (2), F-VF, SE, all sound, paying the short-lived 8 cent registry fee + 3 cent domestic postage, on F-VF unreduced Boston Journal advertising cover. Boston registered postmark on front, partial registry label on reverse.  Small cover tear at top.

SOLD

n2154.jpg (29022 bytes)
1877 #210, fine, tied by VF strike of fancy floral leaf killer of Northampton, MA (Cole GL-85) on VF unreduced cover. $35 n1877.jpg (16183 bytes)
1808 #207, avg, tied by a VF-XF strike of blue-black 1882 Ocean City, NJ fancy postmark and skull and crossbones killer (Cole SK-32 [enlarged image of stamp]) on VF small cover. A wonderful example of this scarce commercially produced killer. $175 n1808.jpg (26008 bytes)
585 #210, fine, with XF SOTN strike of skull & crossbones of Waverly, NY (Cole SK-8, III- desirability), with fine 1886 CDS barely tying, on fine cover. A small reduction at left and minor tone spot at bottom does not detract from this showpiece cancellation. $200 n585.jpg (18171 bytes)
954 #210, fine, tied by XF strike of fancy Northampton, MA ornate letter N cancellation (Cole Ln-37, but a much better strike than pictured) on a fresh, VF unreduced cover. Great cancellation. $40 n954.jpg (18828 bytes)
1033 #213, fine, tied by VF strike of a wedge-shaped negative "W" cancellation ("west") and VF CHI. & DUB. R.P.O DAY postmark, Dec. 20, 1887 usage on VF orange-yellow cover. A very nice railway post office usage. $25 n1033.jpg (18612 bytes)
