New York Foreign Mail (NYFM) Cancellations (#3)

Item # Description Price Picture
4920 #178, F+ stamp, bearing an XF SOTN strike of NYFM wedge killer, a member of Weiss TR-W13 family, most like TR-W13b.  Nice. $15
4640 #156, #158 x 3, paying a double UPU rate to England, canceled by two fair-fine strikes of NYFM spiral geometric killer (Weiss GE-C4/C4A) on fine intact cover postmarked late September, London OCT 11, 1875 back stamp. $75
4527 #179, VF, sound, tied by F-VF strike of NYFM elaborate positive geometric killer (Weiss GE-EP3) on fine, unreduced cover to Ireland, back stamped Limavady, OCT 5, 1875. Small cover tears, small part of flap missing. SOLD
4439 #179, VF-XF, large margins, bearing an XF-superb strike of NYFM fancy star killer (Weiss ST-8P1), scarce. Stamp has pressed vertical crease, nevertheless a beautiful example of the NYFM fancy cancel.  (HCS) $85
4704 #161, fine sound copy, canceled by an XF SOTN strike of NYFM fancy positive geometric killer (Weiss GE-EP 3). SOLD
4705 #162, VF+, a few nibbed perfs at top, otherwise sound, canceled by a VF+ strike of NYFM fancy positive geometric killer (Weiss GE-EP 3). SOLD
4350 #179, about fine, sound, canceled by an XF strike of NYFM geometric killer, Weiss GE-EP4. SOLD
4156 #179, tied by an XF detailed and complete strike of the exceptionally rare NYFM geometric, Weiss GE-EP 13, on VF, entirely intact mourning cover to France.  This is a newly discovered cover, previously unknown to NYFM collectors.  (According to my source this cover was acquired in Europe.)  Prior to this, only three inbound foreign mail covers each bearing Scott 179 (including a spectacular one additionally franked with with Peru 1d green #14) and one cover front to Japan with 157, 158 and 161 (ex-Boker) have been known to exist.  This cover is the only reported transatlantic use of GE-EP 13 and only the fifth on-cover usage now recorded.  Weiss records the three inbound foreign mail covers with dates of use ranging from 1/20/1876 to 5/6/1876; the Japan cover front is postmarked APR 23.  This cover's cancellation date, interestingly, is DEC 9, 1876 based upon the station postmark on the reverse and confirmed by the blue Paris receiving stamp on front, perhaps demonstrating a gap in the use of this killer.  Note that the geometric cancellation is quite clear and distinct showing little wear from earlier uses.  Also note that this fancy NYFM killer was applied when foreign mail ellipse killers had already come into regular use.  The 179 has separation faults at left and a corner crease at bottom right.  However, these faults are trivial relative to the importance of this cover and hardly detract from this spectacular usage.  This cover deserves to be a centerpiece of any NYFM cover collection and exhibit. SOLD

4124 #179 pair, VF, tiny thin in right stamp, otherwise sound, canceled by a VF strike of NYFM fancy geometric killer, Weiss GE-C9, rare on values other than 2 cent vermilion, especially so on a multiple since used on circulars. SOLD
4066 #158 strip of 3 with #156, SE, paying the 10 cent closed mail rate to Rome, Italy on VF intact cover with two strikes of NYFM geometric, Weiss GE-C1. Red DEC 3 (1874) NEW YORK PAID ALL Br. TRANSIT exchange office postmark. One cent stamp has corner fault at UR where it overlapped the edge of the cover. $125

4338 #165, F+ sound and fresh pair, canceled by a SOTN, blurred yet readily distinguishable example of NYFM fancy geometric killer, Weiss GE-C5 struck in black, commonly found in claret. No 30 cent multiple in Weiss collection. Scarce and attractive multiple. $175
4431 #154, F-VF, tiny thin, canceled by an XF-superb SOTN strike of scarce NYFM multi-wedge killer (Weiss TR-W19). No 30c value of this killer in the Weiss collection. A terrific example of this killer.  (HCS) SOLD
4171 #154, fine, canceled by a VF strike in black of NYFM star fancy killer, Weiss type ST-8P1. This killer on National issues is usually found struck in red. Finding it in black ink is much more difficult, especially on high value Banknote. $85
4164 #149, fine, sound, bearing an XF strike of NYFM "flying clothespin" killer, Weiss TR-C7. $60
4429 #163, F-VF, bright color, canceled by a VF-XF red strike of NYFM fancy geometric killer (Weiss GE-EN6), scarce in red. Stamp has neat, professionally sealed 4 mm tear at left, nevertheless a very attractive stamp and killer.  (HCS) $120
4442 #166, fine UR corner margin copy, sound, canceled by a gem SOTN strike of NYFM fancy star killer (Weiss ST-8P10), easily one of the finest strikes extant on this high value Banknote. A wonderful example of this killer, far better than the one illustrated in Weiss.  Beautiful!  (HCS) $350
3947 #155, F-VF, sound, nice margins, bearing a superb SOTN strike of very scarce NYFM fancy killer (Weiss TR-M6). All reported uses of this killer are from 1871, verifying that this is the 90 cent National issue. Terrific NYFM item.  2008 PFC verifying cancel and soundness.
