New York Foreign Mail (NYFM) Cancellations (#2)

Item # Description Price Picture
5541 #160, F-VF, filled thin, canceled by an XF SOTN strike of very scarce NYFM, geometric killer, Weiss GE-C6. This killer was used on circular and printed matter mail. Thus, finding it on a high value stamp is exceedingly difficult and almost certainly a foreign mail usage. SOLD
5533 #156, fine, sound, canceled by an XF strike of NYFM fancy star killer, Weiss type ST-8P4. All NYFM uses on 1¢ Banknote stamps are scarce. SOLD
5376 #148, fine, tiny faults, canceled by an XF strike of rare NYFM numeral killer, Weiss RE-N1, the reversed negative 1 used only a short time in early 1873. This example is a better strike than shown in Weiss, p. 221. SOLD
5324 #151, VF, canceled by VF+ strike of scarce NYFM killer, Weiss GE-S8 and partial red exchange office cancel. No 12¢ value pictured in Weiss. Stamp with small, pressed corner crease at lower left, otherwise sound. Pretty. $75
5109 #O52, F-VF, sound, fresh, canceled by a VF strike of scarce NYFM fancy killer, Weiss TR-S6 (reportedly used in December 1876).  All NYFM killers on officials are quite rare, especially struck this nice. SOLD
4926 #158, VF, on #U83 3 cent green on amber, VF intact entire, both stamp and entire canceled by VF strikes of NYFM fancy star-in-star killer (Weiss ST-MP 1). Cover, mailed to Germany, is unlisted in Weiss census and is postmarked SEP 19 (1874, as verified by Bremen back stamp).  This is an early use, Weiss reporting a date range of 9/17/74 to 11/30/74.  A terrific cover.  NYFM killers are quite scarce on entires. $175
4818 #148, fine, single sp, tied by an exceptional strike of NYFM fancy 8-point star killer (Weiss type ST-8P11) on fine, intact canary cover to Scotland, red May 31, 1873 New York exchange office postmark, Glasgow receiving.  Showy killer. $100
4744 #161, F-VF, sound, bearing an XF SOTN strike of very scarce NYFM fancy, 10-spoke geometric killer, Weiss GE-EP-U1. Great NYFM item. SOLD
4773 #161, fine, sound, bearing an XF-superb SOTN strike of enhanced negative geometric NYFM killer, Weiss GE-EN2. Great cancel item. $85
4658 #O43, F-VF+ 24 cent Navy  Department official, canceled by two partial strikes of NYFM elaborate positive geometric killer (Weiss GE-EP 3). Stamp has a narrow thin that becomes a 4 mm tear at upper left, obscured in the cancel.  All NYFM on officials are rare and desirable. SOLD
4440 #153, VF, small faults, canceled by an XF strike of red NYFM star fancy killer (Weiss ST-8P6). This stamp is pictured in Weiss, p. 175. A gorgeous example of this killer in red.  (HCS)

SOLD

4339 #160, fine, bearing a VF strike of rare NYFM fancy star killer, Weiss ST-8P7. The outer rim of this killer rapidly deteriorated and was ultimately cut away to produce killer ST-8P8. $85
4430 #149, fine, sound, canceled by a VF-XF strike of NYFM open circle of wedges killer (Weiss TR-S3). Killer clearly shows the center dot as a patent punch. Weiss mistakenly discounts this as "pieces of dirt on the cancel."  (HCS) $60
4443 #148, F-VF+, bearing an XF-superb example of NYFM letter N in circle killer. According to research by a noted NYFM cancel collector and documented in the August 2007 issue of the U.S. Cancellation Club News, this is an unlisted NYFM fancy killer (designated by the author as RE-L5) used over a short period in May-July 1874.  This example is nicer than any of those illustrated in the News article.  Despite a 3 mm tear at top, this is a wonderful example of a rare NYFM killer.  (HCS)

SOLD

4165 #161, fine, sound, bearing a VF-XF strike of scarce red NYFM fancy star geometric killer, Weiss ST-8P5. Pretty. $65
4107 #148, straddle margin copy, small faults, tied by XF strike of rare NYFM cross killer (Weiss TR-M5) on intact cover to Prussia.  Cover is postmarked FEB 12, 1873, verified by original correspondence.  The stamp pays the 6 cent NGU direct rate via Bremen.  Weiss reported only five covers with this killer, including only one other with the 6 cent National Lincoln (illustrated page 449 of Weiss, this cover being unlisted and having a superior strike of TR-M5).  Cover has a tiny fault at top left corner.  A wonderful example of a rare NYFM killer. $400
4119 #161, XF, large margins, sound, tied by fine strike of NYFM circle of wedges killer (Weiss TR-W13B) on VF JUL 4, 1874 FLS to Palermo, Italy, Verona and Palermo back stamps, red NEW YORK PAID ALL Br. TRANSIT on front. Pretty. $100
4118 #153, F-VF, fresh, great color, sound, with near complete strike of rare negative NYPO NYFM killer (Weiss RE-L4), the first that I have ever seen on this value.

SOLD

4024 #159, XF, fresh and sound stamp, firm perforations all around, canceled by two strikes of NYFM fancy circle of wedges killer, V-W type S3. Pretty. $40
3980 #150, fine, sound, tied by VF detailed strike of rare NYFM fancy geometric killer GE-S7 (tracing and enlarged stamp detail) on fine intact small cover to France. Cover is postmarked JUN 26, 1872, making this a new and unique ERU by one day for this killer. All cover markings are VF.  For accuracy, there is a small stain along the top edge.  A wonderful and highly exhibitable example of this very scarce NYFM killer.

SOLD

3718 #153, VF sound copy with firm perforations all around and unusually brilliant purple color for this typically faded stamp, cancelled by nice strike of red NYFM star killer ST-8P1. Gorgeous stamp. $200
3724 #150, fine, sound, tied by VF+ strike of fancy NYFM star killer (Weiss ST-8P10) paying Italian closed mail rate on VF FLS to NAPOLI, ITALY. Cover has VF markings, including red NEW YORK PAID ALL APR 12, and two 1873 Italian back stamps: Verona, APR 29 and Napoli, MAY 1.  Back also bears a large, blue circular freight merchant hand stamp.  Ex-David Beals collection, listed in Weiss.
