1861-67 Issues, Covers (#4)

Item # Description Price Picture
4931 #65, sound, XF-superb large margined stamp that probably would grade 90J, tied by a VF+ strike of scarce New York City fancy geometric killer (Skinner-Eno GE-C 10) on intact albino corner embossed advertising cover.  Great item. SOLD

4900 # 65, average, sound, tied by an XF strike of scarce New York City fancy geometric killer (Skinner Eno GE-R 28) on fine canary cover, quarter inch reduced at right. SOLD
4828 #65, fine, SE, bearing an XF SOTN strike of FREE obsolete rate mark on fine cover with light GENOA, NY postmark, cover neatly opened at right. Scarce marking used as killer. $50
4792 #65, fine, fault at left bottom, tied by a VF+ strike of blue BANKS' DIVISION postmark on F-VF intact cover to Salem, MA. This postmark is typically not this well struck.  The stamp shows some paper adherence under a few perfs, strong evidence of having been removed from another envelope and reused on this cover.  Nevertheless, a nice use of this Civil War period military postmark.

SOLD

4666 #65, avg, SE, Civil War across-the-lines prisoner of war mail canceled POINT LOOKOUT, MD, NOV 19, 1864, with XF strike of Prisoner's Letter Examined censor (Harrison type IIa).  Cover was sent to Richmond, VA, where it was rated with hand stamp DUE 10 and forwarded collect.  A very nice and instructive example of the handling of prisoner mail. SOLD

4499 #65, fine, tied by an XF-superb strike of fancy rosette within rosette killer of BRIDGEPORT, CT (S-E GE-R 46) on F-VF corner card advertising cover, neatly opened at left. Ex Eno (Frajola 1/25/86 sale, lot 222X).  (HCS) SOLD
4353 #65, fine, tied by an XF strike of large 8-point rosette fancy killer of BRIDGEPORT, CONN (Skinner-Eno GE-R 57, but a little larger than traced) on fine cover, small piece of flap behind stamp missing, quarter inch reduced at left. $40
4502 #65, fine, tied by superb strike of simple geometric design killer (S-E SD-G 116, clearly the source of the tracing), CAMBRIDGEPORT, MA postmark, on fine unreduced cover, small faults, small piece missing on reverse.  (HCS) $75
4238 #65, fine, tied by an XF strike of rectangular geometric fancy killer (Skinner-Eno GE-S 16) with XF strike of SHIRLEY VILLAGE, MS postmark on fine canary cover, neatly reduced 1/8 inch at right. Attractive fancy framing Washington's portrait. $60
4253 #65, fine, target killer, cover postmarked BOONSBORO, IOA (Boonesborough, Iowa, Boone County DPO, 1851-1893, Helbock 5 scarcity) to Plattsburgh, NY. Manuscript "Due 6 ct" with scarce hand stamp numeral 6. Small cover reduction at left. $30
4151 #65, fine, tied by an XF strike of large fine patent grid killer (unlisted in S-E), clearly cutting into the stamp, on fine cover with ABINGTON, PA postmark (Montgomery County, 1832-). Cover neatly opened at left. $25
4065 #94, fine, tied by VF strike of WORCESTER & NASHUA, Ms, R.R. railroad postmark (Towle 21-A-1, Remele W8-a, rated scarce by both) on XF intact cover to Ashford, CT, late use of this postmark. $75
3804 #65, fine, grid killer, on fine intact cover canceled by unusual OCT 31, 1863 outlined letter postmark of BRANDON, VERMONT (Rutland county, 1801-). This unusual postmark variety is not noted in references. $30

2699 #65, fine, light blue Belvidere, IL postmark ties to unreduced Civil War cover to Capt. Charles. B. Sook, Co. B 95 Regiment, Illinois Vol., via Cairo, VF back stamp RECEIVED AT CAIRO Ill, DEC 25, 1862 (scan). Nice and scarce marking. $45 n2699.jpg (12310 bytes)
2640 #65, fine, faults, tied by VF strike of scarce thimble-sized FORT SCHUYLER, NY, JUL 25, 186? postmark. This unusual postmark is listed in Skinner-Eno as PM-FT 1. Cover is fine with small reduction at right. $35 n2640.jpg (19630 bytes)
